Deputy Attorney General Dr Justice Srem Sai says his commitment to justice and human rights makes it impossible for him to ever engage in political persecution.
In an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express on Wednesday, he rejected suggestions that his office or the current government is using the law to target political opponents, particularly Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
“I didn’t come to the Attorney General’s office to harass people,” Dr Srem Sai said.
“I’ve spent over a decade defending human rights, often in the most difficult cases. Why would I now turn around and become part of something that contradicts everything I’ve stood for?”
He dismissed claims of political witch-hunting as completely unfounded.
“I don’t think the government, the Attorney General’s department, or any of the agencies we work with are engaged in persecuting anyone — and definitely not Chairman Wontumi,” he stated.
Dr Srem Sai explained that the nature of legal work often prevents law enforcement from responding immediately to accusations.

“It’s not appropriate for me to say this person has done this or that when investigations are ongoing.”
He was emphatic that once the full docket is ready, the public will see the facts for themselves.
“When the investigative report is done, you will see there’s no persecution. There’s no way we would do that. None.”
The Deputy Attorney General also pointed to the example set by his superiors.
“My boss will not do that. President Mahama has made it clear that he is not in this business to execute anyone. That is not his agenda.”
Dr Srem Sai added that any attempt to misuse their offices for political ends would cost them their jobs.
“We know very well that if there is any evidence of misuse of office to persecute opponents, we won’t last in our positions for even an hour. So we won’t take that risk.”
His comments come amid accusations from some political figures and commentators that ongoing investigations involving opposition members are politically motivated.
But Dr Srem Sai insisted that such claims are not only false but dangerous.
“What we’re doing is based on evidence, procedure, and the rule of law. This is not a theatre of vengeance. It’s law enforcement.”
