Dr. Ansa-Asare speaking on The Pulse
Former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Dr. Ansah-Asare, has called for an immediate end to the persistent legal tussles surrounding the suspension of Chief Justice, Getrude Torkornoo.
Speaking on The Pulse on JoyNews on Tuesday, May 27, Dr. Ansah-Asare stated that while it would be unconstitutional to halt the impeachment proceedings, as some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have proposed, there is an urgent need to cease the growing public controversy and allow due legal process to run its course.
“We cannot be indulging in this back-and-forth injunction; it has now become like a table tennis ball, it is on the table, and until the ball drops, the injunction flies here and there. So litigation must come to an end, and it is in the interest of not only the Ladyship Chief Justice but the entire nation that this whole controversy, this whole CJ removal process that has now brought political controversy, come to an end as soon as possible,” he said.
Dr. Ansah-Asare cautioned against turning a constitutional matter into a spectacle, urging all political actors to exercise restraint and respect the process that has been established to probe the CJ.
His comments come in the wake of a fresh announcement by Parliament that a new set of guidelines will soon be introduced to provide clarity and consistency in the removal process for judges at the superior courts.
The proposed guidelines are expected to bring structure and transparency to future impeachment proceedings and avoid what some have described as politically charged and chaotic processes.
The Chief Justice’s suspension has triggered a string of legal disputes between the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition NPP.
The matter has not only sparked intense courtroom battles but has also ignited debates on constitutional interpretation, judicial independence, and political interference.
