This Saturday on Newsfile, host Samson Lardy Anyenini and his panelists will discuss the looming power crisis announced by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor.

The Minister has raised concerns over a potential nationwide power crisis, revealing that Ghana currently has less than three days’ worth of liquid fuel to power its electricity-generating plants.

Appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, John Jinapor disclosed that Ghana urgently needs billions of cedis to procure liquid fuel in order to keep the power plants operational. He warned that without immediate funding, the country risks a nationwide power shutdown.

According to the Minister, Ghana owes over $1.7 billion to Independent Power Producers (IPPs), and an urgent $1.1 billion is needed to secure enough liquid fuel for power generation. He further stated that Karpower, one of Ghana’s major power producers, has threatened to shut down its operations if the government fails to settle its outstanding debts.

Earlier this week, the depreciation of Ghana’s cedi has demonstrated remarkable strength by appreciating well against the US dollar. In a brief but firm statement, GUTA appealed to the trading community to reflect the currency gains in their pricing.

Despite the cedi’s appreciation, many traders have been hesitant to reduce prices, citing concerns about the sustainability of the currency’s gains.

The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry and trade associations have agreed to effect a significant reduction in prices of finished goods in the next two months if the cedi continues its good run against the US dollar and other major foreign currencies.

Also this week, Sammy Gyamfi, the acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), sparked public outrage after gifting an undisclosed sum of U.S. dollars to Evangelist Nana Agradaa. The gesture, seen by many as inappropriate given current economic challenges, triggered a wave of criticism, though he apologised for his actions.

He was subsequently summoned by the Chief of Staff but the presidency later said no further actions ought to be taken against Sammy Gyamfi beyond apology and caution.

The show will explore whether these actions signal real progress or are short-term responses to growing concerns.
