A former Chief of Staff and Minister of Presidential Affairs under former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s administration says it is appropriate for former President Nana Akufo-Addo to take the blame for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections.

He argues that holding Nana Akufo-Addo accountable is only logical, especially if widespread reports and public sentiment indicate that the government underperformed since he was the head of that government.

“That should be normal, because if we agree that the government didn’t perform well and as head of the government, he should take a lot of the blame,” he said on JoyNews ‘The Pulse’ on Tuesday, April 29.

Responding to those who claim that the former president did not govern alone and worked with a team, Mr Mpiani said if the administration had performed well, Akufo-Addo would have been the one receiving all the praise.

“If he had done so well that Ghanaians were praising us (NPP), he would have been the person they would praise. The Akufo-Addo administration has done so well,” he said.

“But if your administration didn’t do well, then he should take the blame for it.”

Mr Mpiani added that he did not understand why former President Akufo-Addo appeared to be resistant to input from the very people he was elected to serve.

He also expressed surprise at revelations made by former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who claimed that certain things were happening in the government that he was unaware of.

According to him, Dr Bawumia was a very active member of the Akufo-Addo administration and should have kept the party informed about issues within the government.

“Otherwise, we might have gone to the president to say, ‘This is what we are being told is happening. Mr President, can you do something about it?” he added.
