Ghanaian comic actor Clemento Suarez, has urged players in the comedy space to pay attention to developing stand-up comedy in all parts of the country.

According to him, even though stand-up comedy has won more spurs in recent times, one of the ways to maximise its fortunes is making sure comedians across the country are empowered.

He proffered this advice while speaking to Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM‘s Showbiz A-Z on Saturday, April 5, 2025.

“Those who have the light on them can pull them up once in a while but it should be it should be treated like some kind of a decentralisation thing. See, Mahama is the President, but there is some DCE somewhere, there is a MP there, taking care of the constituency, there is a regional minister there.

So I think if we do that, these people [comedians] are in Accra though but once they decide to take a show somewhere, because those in the regions have held the grounds there, once you patch them it’s it’s going to be a good show, So, these people can bring hem up, two, we can empower them wherever they are to be champions there so that going there will be easier,” he said.

Also recounting his personal experience, comedian Oh Joo spoke about how impressed he was when met a brilliant Hausa comedian at an event.

Clemento Suarez, Oh Joo, and Lekzy DeComic who appeared on the show suggested that comedians n various parts of the country do not necessarily have to present their content in English. They advised that the comedians should study the demography of their target audience and tailor their materials accordingly.

In the past few years, the comedy industry in Ghana has experience a massive improvement with regards to patronage and visibility. Stand-up comedians in Kumasi and Accra, attract hundreds and thousands of comedy lovers to their concerts.

In 2024, over twenty (20) stand-up comedy specials were held in Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi. This situation has given hope to a lot of creative industry people considering the previous lack of interest in Ghanaian comedy.

At present Ghana can boast of stand-up comedians such DKB, Jacinta, Ebenezer Dwomoh, Ranzy Ray, Smile, Kwaku40, Kojo Pjay, Oh Joo, Papa Yaw and Putogo.

Others are Foster Romanus, Jerry Ashinyo, Kwame Obed, MJthecomedian, Comedian Warris, Lekzy DeComic, Afia Bareclona and Ato Pah.
