The Member of Parliament for Ofoase/Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has emphasised the importance of truthfulness during the presentation of the country’s economic record.

Speaking on Joy News, he stated that Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson must be transparent when reporting on the nation’s economic situation.

His remarks come ahead of the much-anticipated budget presentation by Finance Minister Dr Ato Forson, scheduled for Tuesday, March 11, 2025.

According to him, the economic record of Ghana is not something that can be manipulated for political gain.

“The economic record of this country is not in the mouth of any politician,” he said, stressing the need for consistency and accuracy in the data presented.

Referencing the Ghana Statistical Service, Oppong Nkrumah explained that key institutions like the Bank of Ghana regularly publish updates on the country’s economic performance.

“I understand that this morning, they are working on the latest GDP numbers. The Bank of Ghana and other state institutions continually release Ghana’s economic data, which should form the basis of any economic discussion,” he said.

He further cautioned that the Finance Minister should avoid political pressures to manipulate the economic figures and present an overly optimistic or distorted view of the economy.

“I think the Finance Minister should desist from any invitations from political forces to twist the numbers to paint a more favourable story of the Ghanaian economy than it really is,” he warned.

He also highlighted the potential risks of doing so, noting that it could scare investors away and damage the country’s credibility.

“If he does that, he will not be true to the economic record of the country,” he added.

“What we need to do is to be true to the economy and to build on the successes so far,” he concluded.
