President John Mahama has urged leaders to embrace accountability and lead by example, emphasising the importance of public trust in governance.

Speaking during an engagement with the Ghanaian community in Ethiopia on Monday, February 17, he reiterated the necessity of responsible leadership and transparency.

“Those of us in leadership, we must lead by example. We must be prepared to be held accountable for taking the public trust.

“If you accept to serve in the public sector, then you must be prepared to answer to the people because it is the people who took you there—you serve at their pleasure,” he stated.

President Mahama stressed that leadership comes with significant responsibility and expectations, noting noted that while his administration is focused on holding past officials accountable, current leaders must also recognise that they would equally be held to the same standard.

“The green letter comes with a lot of responsibility and expectation, and I have said that while we hold those who came before us accountable, we should remember that we are also going to be held accountable,” he emphasised.

He assured Ghanaians that his administration is committed to governance reforms that will create a transparent and accountable leadership framework.

“We may not be able to complete that process, but at least I am determined that we lay the foundation and put Ghana on the right track,” he added.

President Mahama also outlined his priorities, including constitutional amendments, economic stabilisation, and job creation for the youth. He mentioned that these reforms must be undertaken with urgency to ensure sustainable development.

“So amending the constitution, holding people accountable for the public trust, and making sure that we stabilise the economy and create the opportunity for our young people to work as quickly as possible is the task ahead of us,” he stated.
