Abigail Quartey defeated Sangeeta Birdi to become Ghana’s 1st female world champion
Ghana’s first female boxing champion, Abigail Quartey is expecting national recognition on the back her title triumph.
The 28-year-old punched her way into history as a trailblazer, having won the Women’s International Boxing Federation (WIBF) belt in November.
She eased past British opponent Sangeeta Birdi with a barrage of punches and uppercuts to become the nation’s first female world titleholder and the 11th overall in Ghana’s history.
“I have achieved something great for the whole country now,” she told JoySports’ Haruna Mubarak in a documentary titled “Abigail Quartey: Her Gloves, Her Glory”.
“I am expecting an invitation from the President because this is a historic achievement.
“I am sure he’s heard the news, but perhaps he’s waiting for the authorities to make the first move before arranging a meeting.”
It has been three months since Abigail etched her name in the annals of history with no recognition yet from the government.
“It is very sad because that should not be the case,” Former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection Dakoa Newman told JoySports exclusively.
“It is quite unfortunate, I can understand that she will be disappointed and I can even give her a call. I didn’t know about it until recently.
“Nobody wants to be left behind or feel that they are left behind.”
The focus now shifts to how Abigail can successfully defend her title and cement her legacy.
