Osei Yaw Donkor, a student from the Unique Educational Complex in Konongo, emerged victorious in the 2024 National Junior Spelling Bee, Ghana’s most prestigious spelling competition.

Remarkably, Osei Yaw, who enrolled as a Basic 4 learner within the Basic 1-4 category, clinched the coveted title after an intense series of spelling rounds.

The competition culminated in a thrilling showdown between Osei Yaw Donkor and Rhesa-Meek Chimaobie Allotey from Martyrs of Uganda Jubilee School, Kumasi.

After several gruelling rounds, the tie was finally broken through a speed round, where Osei Yaw spelt 26 words, getting 22 correct, to secure his victory.

Rhesa-Meek claimed the second position, while Joycelyn Amaya Awini of Vine Christian School took third place. Abdiel Naa Balbaare finished fourth, and Maame Efua Nyarko Akyere Boateng of Our Lady of Holy Cross secured the fifth position.

Osei Yaw’s outstanding performance earned him a cash prize of GHC10,000, a trophy, a medal, a tablet from Homii Mobile, a dictionary, and a citation.

Rhesa-Meek was awarded GHC5,000, a medal, a tablet from Homii Mobile, a dictionary, and a citation.

Joycelyn Amaya received GHC3,000, a medal, a tablet from Homii Mobile, a dictionary, and a citation.

The fourth and fifth place winners also received tablets from Homii Mobile, medals, dictionaries, and citations.

Participants who ranked sixth to tenth were presented with medals, dictionaries, and citations, ensuring that every contestant was recognised for their efforts.

Osei Yaw Donkor’s journey to victory is a testament to resilience and perseverance. After finishing in the top ten during the 2023 finals, he returned with renewed determination to claim the top spot.

Similarly, Joycelyn Amaya, who did not progress beyond the semi-finals in 2023, showcased remarkable improvement to secure third place this year.
