The Ministry of Education has dismissed reports suggesting that the government intends to scrap the teacher trainee allowance, describing the claims as misleading and sensational.

The Ministry’s response follows a front-page publication in the Tuesday, February 4, 2025 edition of The Daily Graphic with the headline “Teacher Trainee Allowance to go.”

In a statement, the Ministry clarified that the news report misrepresented the comments made by the Minister of Education during a discussion with executives of the Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF).

According to the statement, “the Minister, during his interaction with Executives of the Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), explained that Government is open to augmenting the financial needs of students in the Colleges of Education.

“To this end, he indicated that Government would seek to consider an enhanced loan scheme for students in this category, if need be.

“In addition, the Minister was emphatic that Government would maintain the allowances until further deliberations and a firm agreement is reached with all stakeholders.”

The Ministry therefore urged the media outlet to correct what it described as a “wrong impression” created by its report and to give the rejoinder equal prominence.

It also encouraged media houses to verify information with the Ministry before publication to avoid unnecessary concerns among stakeholders.
