Ahead of the second edition of the Ghana Dance Industry Awards on February 8, 2025, the organisers have unveiled the plaque for the winners.

The GHADI Award plaque is a masterpiece of artistic expression borne out of the fusion of multiple concepts. Every element, from the choice of colours to the figurine and engraved symbols, carries deep traditional significance, making the statuette an embodiment of Ghanaian pride.

Colour Scheme

The black and gold colours represent strength, authority and wealth. A timeless combination of both exudes luxury, sophistication, and glamour, creating an ambiance of opulence and refinement.

The Figurine

The iconic azonto pose, symbolising victory and the unbridled joy of dance, is the first part of the figurine. As a modern dance form born in Ghana, azonto represents unity in diversity, transcending tribal boundaries. This dance style has become Ghana’s contribution to the global dance syllabus, leaving an indelible mark on the world.

The second part of the figurine is the djembe drum, a musical tool that empowers dance. The djembe, a Bambara (from Mali) word meaning “everyone gather together in peace,” highlights the communal essence of dance and the importance of harmony in group performances.

The merger of modern and traditional dance styles is beautifully depicted, with the azonto pose sitting atop the djembe drum. This representation acknowledges the traditional dance as the foundation for the evolution of modern dance.

Engraved Symbols

Ten carefully selected adinkra symbols adorn the djembe drum, with five on each side. These symbols represent essential values and virtues born from Ghanaian philosophy, that lead to success and stardom:

The Star Symbol at the heart of the dancer represents the idea that true stardom originates from within. Every individual is born with innate brilliance, but it’s only by embracing vital values and virtues – such as those embodied by the Adinkra symbols – that we can ignite and share our inner light.

Speaking to the Concept Developer of the plaque, who is also the founder of the Ghana Dance Industry Awards, Robert Klah, he said “for an awards plaque I wanted something Ghanaian, with rich meaning. And I am happy Sweet Aroma Print did a good job with the production. Dancers embody art and culture, and so the plaque had to represent art and culture. It is my hope that award winners will treasure this plaque, remembering the principles and values it symbolizes.”

The Ghana Dance Industry Awards is slated for Saturday 8th February, 2025 at the National Theatre of Ghana, with Jay Foley and Chrystal Kwame Aryee as MCs.

Gates opens at 6:30pm. Red carpet begins at 7pm and the main ceremony will commence at 8:30pm. The Ghana Dance Industry Awards is brought to you in collaboration with the Dancers & DanceSport Association of Ghana, and powered by Dancetera.
