Government’s Spokesperson on Governance and Security, Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has expressed concern over former President John Mahama’s promise to cancel the teacher licensure examination.

Mr Boakye-Danquah suggested that Mahama’s commitment to scrapping the exam raises questions about his desperation for political power in the 2024 general elections.

During an appearance on GTV’s Breakfast Show on Monday, November 20, Mr Boakye-Danquah argued that Mahama seems willing to promise anything for political gain and criticized his apparent tendency to oppose policies introduced by the Akufo-Addo government.

The spokesperson emphasised that Mahama’s stance on cancelling beneficial policies might pose challenges for the country.

“Mahama’s promise to cancel the teachers’ licensure exams is concerning. Because we can’t downplay the importance of the policy. If this is cancelled, then what becomes of our teachers? I didn’t wish that we were going to politicize this, rather I wished that the NDC would have enough thought process and had lot of counsel from their former running mate about the essence of education.”

“I am not even sure that the teachers are even in support of this. So I find Mr Mahama as a problem for Ghana since he is all about wanting to cancel everything good in the country.”

Former President John Mahama has pledged to discontinue the teacher licensure examination if elected in 2024, criticising the concept as poorly thought through.

Mr Mahama questioned the necessity of an additional test for students of Colleges of Education after completing their examinations.

While Mahama and the NDC advocate for the abolition of the licensure exams, the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has opposed the proposal, maintaining that the policy is beneficial and should be retained.
