Although Santrofi is making great strides in Europe and other parts of the world, the Ghanaian band does not get high reception in Ghana.

According to Emmanuel Ofori, the leader of Santrofi band, this is why they don’t play a lot of shows in Ghana.

In an interview on Joy FM with Kwame Dadzie, he said there is no need to focus on Ghana if music lovers outside the country will appreciate their craft.

“If I play in my own country and I’m gonna have just three people dancing, and I play i someone’a country and I have everyone else dancing, I would like to play there. Because when we play indigenous highlife at +233 you don’t have many people dancing or getting connected to it,” he said on Showbiz A-Z.

“Except for a few niche people, Ghanaians don’t really connect to highlife,” he noted.

He admitted that the general Ghanaian music community would rather expect the band to do covers of popular songs but they are not ready to toe that line.

Ofori said they are committed to pushing their agenda of highlife music originally composed by the band.

Santrofi is a group of well-known young artistes in Ghana’s music circles who are quite emblematic of the new vintage-inspired highlife, highlife funk, and afrobeat.

Their goal is to honour classic highlife music in all of its forms and fusions, from early Afro-Cuban and calypso strains to funky soul workouts and Nigerian influences of Afro-beat and Juju grooves, all expertly executed with the requisite rippling guitars, tight horn section, driving percussion, and fine harmony

Santrofi is admired for its visionary clarity as well as the transforming beauty and force of its music. Santrofi’s debut album, Alewa’, depicts the impact of Ghana’s highlife music’s journey through several, yet interwoven eras.

Santrofi has played over 80 shows since 2019 and has been billed for some of the biggest festivals in Europe, shared stages with music greats like Eryka Badu, Ziggie, Marley, Cardi B, Chance the Rapper, Justin Beiber, Macy Grey, among others.

In July 2020, their debut album was number the world music chart which had over 40 different indigenous world music music albums competing.

They are set to release a new album in May 2023 which will feature some prominent names in todays music.

The band is also getting ready for a tour in Japan next year.
