Inadequate furniture in several basic schools in Ghana partly creates an unfavourable environment for teaching and learning.

At the Nana Frimpong Memorial International School in the Ahafo region, single desks are shared by at least two pupils, which adversely affects learning and punctuality of pupils.

As an intervention, the Kumasi City Mall has donated 55 sets of dual desks and other materials to help improve education.

Quality education and proper learning environments are usually assessed by students’ comfort and adequate infrastructure.

The classrooms of Nana Frimpong Memorial International School at Kwasu-Bechem in the Ahafo Region have limited furniture.

The few available old desks are broken and in need of repairs.

The situation, coupled with leaking roofs and inadequate classroom blocks, is taking a toll on academic performance and enthusiasm for learning.

The over two-hundred pupil population has reduced to a little of over sixty.

Prince Agyekum, Principal of Nana Frimpong Memorial International School, explained that the classrooms are not enough.

“…When it rains, it drips into the classrooms. We only collect GHc3 per day from pupils. And this is insufficient to even pay the salaries of teachers, let alone develop the school. Some teachers have quit because of this condition,” he said.

Kumasi City Mall, as part of its corporate social responsibility, has donated 55 sets of dual desks, 6 sets of desks and chairs for teachers, as well as six packs of roofing sheets to mitigate the situation at the Nana Frimpong Memorial International School.

Marketing Manager of Kumasi City Mall, John Nana Badu Bonsu, indicated that the urgency of the situation influenced the gesture.

“As a business, we are committed not only to giving quality services to our customers but also affecting the lives of our community, especially deprived communities. So, management decided to make these donations to put them in a position where the children can comfortably learn and become better people,” he said.
