General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has disclosed that nearly all members of the party’s National Council supported the decision to hold early presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme on Wednesday, 18th June, Mr Kodua revealed that about 99% of the Council members backed the proposal during a recent meeting in Accra.
“Almost 99 per cent of the members of the National Council supported the proposal for early presidential primaries,” he stated.
The move follows a resolution by the National Executive Committee (NEC) on Tuesday, 17th June, setting 31st January 2026 as the date for the party’s presidential primaries. The decision forms part of the NPP’s broader strategy to foster early planning, ensure internal unity, and gain a competitive advantage ahead of the next general elections.
“We believe that electing our presidential candidate early gives the party enough time to rally behind the candidate and build momentum going into the general elections,” Mr Kodua Frimpong explained.
He dismissed suggestions that an early primary could fuel internal conflict, maintaining that party unity remains paramount. He also assured that the process would be transparent and inclusive.
“This is about putting the party’s interests first. We are confident this decision will strengthen our chances in 2028,” he affirmed.
Mr Kodua added that the leadership would continue to engage all stakeholders to maintain internal cohesion and ensure a smooth electoral process.
