The sad news is that six private schools proprietors have lost their lives since the unexpected closure of all schools in the country on March 16, 2020, amid the outbreak of coronavirus.

The National Executive Director of the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS), Mr. Enock Kwasi Gyetuah announced the sudden demise of the six proprietors of private schools in an interview with the Accra based Starr FM.

The GNACOPS Executive Director said they died due to the implications of restrictions imposed to slow and curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Mr. Gyetuah furthered that the temporal closure of schools for the last five months has put a financial strain on the majority of private school owners, a situation he said contributes to the demise of the six school proprietors.

The Executive Director lamented that “We have lost six proprietors because of this…when they see their teachers, they collapse and when they take them to the hospitals they don’t come back. Even next week we are going to bury one of our members.”

Commenting on the recent school reopening for second-year Junior and Senior High School students, Mr. Enoch Gyetuah of behalf of GNACOPS said the government’s decision was not a step in the right direction.

In the view of him, the “Akufo-Addo government should have reopened schools for all Junior high students and not only for second-year students”.

Mr. Gyetuah added that “we don’t accept this reopening of schools because if you look at things, what academic calendar are they going to continue?”

According to the Director, there wasn’t an effective consultation with stakeholders in the education sector as claimed by President Akufo-Addo in his 16th televised nation’s address.

He furthered that the 10 member committee sat only twice to discuss the school reopening but instead they were supposed to sit about five times and with broader consultation.
