The Inspector General of Police (IGP) this week ordered a series of coordinated raids on illegal mining towns known for rampant galamsey activities, particularly those taking place within settlements and along major highways in the Western, Ashanti, and Central Regions.

A total of 30 suspects were arrested during separate operations conducted at Wassa Dadieso, Wassa Gyapa, Akrokerri, and Huniso near Tarkwa.
One of the key operations took place at Huniso, in the Western Region, where 13 suspects were apprehended. They have since been remanded by the Tarkwa Circuit Court and are scheduled to reappear on 6th June 2025.

In another operation at Akrokerri, near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region, police raided an illegal mining site located within a residential area. The miners were reportedly using explosives to blast the land, causing destruction to property belonging to Asare Bediako Senior High School.
Following an order from the IGP, the Ashanti South Regional Police Commander, ACP Joseph Nyaaba, led a team of officers to the site, which was about 200 metres from the school. The police arrested nine suspects who were found actively engaged in illegal mining.
On 29th May, the IGP also directed a raid on mining sites within Dunkwa-On-Offin.
The operation, led by Divisional Commander Superintendent David Ashong, ASP Emmanuel Bruce (FPU Base Commander), and 20 other officers, resulted in the arrest of two miners, Samuel Ankamah and Daniel Agyeman.

The suspects were found operating excavators along the banks of the River Offin. Both individuals, along with the excavators, are currently in the custody of the Dunkwa Police pending further investigations.
A similar operation was carried out at Wassa Dadieso, a community notorious for deep illegal mining pits dug within residential compounds and along major roadways.

The raid was led by Chief Superintendent William Jabialu, the Wassa Akropong District Police Commander. His team, comprising nine senior police officers and 73 personnel, targeted miners operating dangerously close to public roads.
The police extended the operation to Wassa Gyapa, another hub for galamsey activity. During this exercise, more than 135 chanfan machines were destroyed and set ablaze. One motorbike was also impounded, and six illegal miners were arrested despite challenging and muddy terrain.
All suspects are currently in police custody and assisting with investigations. They are expected to be arraigned in court in the coming days.
