2026 World Cup: Sports Minister supports diaspora inclusion in Black Stars squad

Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, says every Ghanaian footballer stands a chance of earning a place in the Black Stars squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, provided they are selected by the technical team.

His comments come after Ghana sealed qualification for the global showpiece with a 1-0 victory over Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Amid ongoing public debate about whether new players, particularly those of Ghanaian descent abroad, should be called up, the Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency insists that selection will be based purely on merit and the coach’s discretion.

“Every Ghanaian who knows how to play has the opportunity to go to the World Cup if the coach decides that he wants,” he told Asempa FM.

“It doesn’t matter if the player was part of the team during the qualifiers or not. It doesn’t matter if the player has played before or not.”

The Minister further pledged his support for efforts to strengthen the national team ahead of the tournament.

“That is my responsibility, and if I am contacted to help, I will. Even some of the players playing now, I did some background work to get them to the national team.

“It’s not about my party people but even people in opposition, I talked to them just to bring them to the national team, so whoever they want to bring in, I will be there to assist,” he added.

Many have described diapora players as “opportunist” for availing themselves to play for the country at the World Cup.

Meanwhile, the official draw for the 2026 World Cup is set for December 5, 2025, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
