2025 Democracy Cup: Organisers visit Ga Mantse, NCCE and EC ahead of September 5 event

Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics will face off in the 2025 edition of the Democracy Cup on Friday, September 5, at the University of Ghana Stadium.

Ahead of the fixture, organisers of the event, led by the Clerk to Parliament, Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, paid courtesy calls on key figures in Ghana’s democracy.

The delegation visited the Ga Mantse Palace to officially inform him about the game and seek his blessings.

In his remarks, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II commended the organisers for the initiative and pledged to purchase 1,000 tickets to support the event.

“We should not take our democracy for granted, and I believe it is a great initiative from the Members of Parliament and the Speaker of Parliament to lead this and seek to bring all Ghanaians together,” he said.

“Most countries have been through elections and ended up in civil war or something of that sort, but we have enjoyed peace and earned a lot of respect.

Today, I’m ready to support this game with 1,000 tickets.”

In between the Ga Mantse visit, the team also called on the National Commission for Civic Education and the Electoral Commission.

At the EC head office, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Bossman Asare pledged the Commission’s support for the game and urged Parliament to include the EC in next year’s curtain-raiser.

“On behalf of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, who for one reason could not join us, I want to assure you—and ask you to inform the Speaker—that we are in full support of this initiative. Next week Friday, we will organise ourselves and be there to support.

“We would also wish that next time, in the curtain-raiser, the Electoral Commission—with our able-bodied men and women—is featured prominently.”

The Clerk to Parliament, Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, said Parliament is leveraging the unifying power of football to promote democracy.

“Have you noted that football is a game that draws almost every Ghanaian closer? Football brings people together. It engenders competition, keenly contested competition. And the aim of either side is to win and capture the trophy.

“But you would have noted over the years that once a winner is declared, that ends the competition.”
