A clash between hunters and farmers in Kumtumbiliyili in the Zabzugu district of the Northern region has claimed two lives and left several others injured.
According to eyewitnesses, the hunters had invaded the area on a hunting expedition. While hunting, they set fire to the land, which ravaged a farmer’s yam barn, triggering the disturbance.
Residents said when the farm produce burned, the community accosted the hunters who were near the farm. However, more hunters who were in the bush joined the clash, escalating the already heated atmosphere.
Previously, hunting in the area had been banned by National Security, especially in communities such as Kandin, Sheini, and Nahuyili, which are prone to conflicts. However, a month ago, the hunters resumed the activity, leading to today’s clash.
Group hunting is a common practice in the region, with hunters travelling in trucks to different locations to hunt in forest reserves and communities.
There have been several incidents of bushfires attributed to these hunting expeditions, prompting farmers and other stakeholders to call for a ban. However, such a ban has yet to be implemented across the entire region.
Residents said that many people have fled into the bushes, fearing for their lives.
Those injured are currently receiving treatment at the Tatale Hospital. Additionally, one of the individuals initially believed to be dead has regained consciousness and is now receiving medical care at the hospital.
A resident added that ethnic tensions are being read into the clash, which, if not handled with caution, could result in a larger conflict.
Meanwhile, the Assembly Member for the area, Punala Daniel, is appealing for reinforcement of security in the area to prevent the situation from escalating into a full-blown conflict.
