Widespread flooding has hit parts of Tema Manhean following heavy rains that swept across sections of the Greater Accra Region in the early hours of Sunday, leaving residents stranded and properties submerged.

The downpour, which began around 3 a.m., caused water levels to rise rapidly, severely affecting low-lying communities such as Waterland in Tema New Town.

Several homes were inundated, streets became impassable, and several families were forced to flee as floodwaters entered their living spaces.

Residents decline evacuation

Despite the risks, some residents declined evacuation, citing fears that leaving their homes unattended could expose them to theft.

Meanwhile, Ghana Navy personnel and community volunteers continue to navigate flooded streets to reach vulnerable individuals, while officials closely monitor the situation and intensify relief efforts to prevent further casualties.

A resident of Waterland, Eric Adjetey, recounted the frightening moment the floods struck, saying he was asleep when he was suddenly awakened by gushing water entering his home. He said he quickly rushed out to avoid being trapped as the water level rose rapidly.

Blocked drain blamed

The Assembly Member for the Oninku Electoral Area, Felix Mensah Normeshie, told the Daily Graphic that the situation was difficult, attributing the flooding to a major drain in the community that had been blocked.

He further revealed that a four-day-old baby who was nearly swept away by the floodwaters was rescued by community members, adding that the child is in good condition.
