Volta Region marks 80th Remembrance Day to honour Ghana’s fallen heroes

The Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC), in collaboration with the 66 Artillery Regiment and the Veterans Administration Ghana (VAG), has held the 80th Remembrance Anniversary Parade to honour Ghana’s fallen heroes.

The solemn ceremony, held on Tuesday, November 11, at Ho Jubilee Park, brought together regional security heads, traditional authorities, religious leaders, students, veterans, and members of the public to mark Remembrance Day, also observed globally as “Poppy Day.”

The event paid tribute to Ghanaian soldiers and peacekeepers who lost their lives in various wars and international peacekeeping missions.

In an interview with Adom News, the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, commended the bravery and patriotism of the nation’s fallen servicemen and women, noting that their legacy continues to inspire future generations.

“Today, we not only remember those who gave their lives in the line of duty, but we also renew our collective commitment to build a peaceful and prosperous Ghana,” he said.

The Volta/Oti Regional Officer of VAG, FCPO1 Bediako Solomon, expressed gratitude to the government for honouring the day. He appealed for increased support for surviving veterans—some over 100 years old—calling for financial and welfare assistance to improve their living conditions.

Wreaths were laid on behalf of the President of Ghana, the Security Services, the Veterans Administration Ghana, and the Volta Regional House of Chiefs in remembrance of the departed heroes. A two-minute silence was observed to mark the 1918 armistice that ended World War I.

The parade featured contingents from the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ghana Prisons Service. Religious leaders also offered prayers for the souls of the departed and for continued peace and stability in Ghana and across the world

Remembrance Day is a long-standing national tradition observed annually on November 11 to honour the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of Ghanaian men and women who served in the World Wars and various UN and AU peacekeeping operations.
