Former President Jerry John Rawlings has opined that the killings that have engulfed the Sogakope District is as a result of a lack of proper punishment of culprits.
According to him, the culprits are mostly not dealt with accordingly by the law and so tend to have the freedom and the free will to go on a killing spree.
“I think some of these things happen because some of the killings that have been going on in this country and especially in this area are not being dealt with appropriately, so people feel they can do things like that with impunity and get away with it, knowing they will not pay the price with their lives as well”.
The lawmaker furthermore stated that the security forces are not fully equipped to tackle issues like these, therefore, being unable to perform their roles effectively concerning the protection of citizens.
The former president’s remark comes at the back of the alarming rate of killings in the district with the latest of them being the Assemblyman for Sogakope Marcus Mawutor Adzahli who was murdered by unknown armed men in his house.
Jerry Rawlings gave the speech when he joined the people of Sogakope District to commemorate Ghana’s 63rd Independence Day Celebration.
Extending his condolences and solidarity to the bereaved and townsfolk, he stated that he was hopeful that correct information will be forthcoming to ensure that those responsible for the savagery are dealt with.
However, he, charged all security personnel and citizens to be vigilant to prevent such violent and criminal attacks.
