Security at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Regional Delegates’ Congress in the Upper West Region has been beefed up with personnel from the Ghana Police Service and Military to ensure a smooth exercise.
Per the advice from the National Security Ministry, personnel from the National Security were also expected at the election centre to avert any possible terrorist attack, due to the large gathering.
Mr Seth Panwum Boyoyo, the Upper West Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Elections Committee, made this known to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Wa on Friday ahead of the NPP regional election on Saturday, May 28.
“We’ve held a meeting with the security agencies and adequate security will be provided. There will be massive security presence, both police and military, and the National Security.”
“The reason being the alleged terrorist attacks of large gathering, so we will just not leave anything to chance,” he said.
Mr Boyoyo said officers from the Electoral Commission and their materials were ready for the exercise with the ballot papers deposited at the police station, under lock and key.
In all 35 aspirants had successfully gone through the filing and vetting processes to contest for the 10 regional executive positions, with 259 delegates expected to cast their ballots.
The incumbent Regional Charmin of the party, Mr S.B. Kangbere and Mr Mahama Toyiba are contesting for the Chairmanship position while two people are aspiring for the 1st Vice Chairman slot, with five aspirants vying for the 2nd Vice Chairman position.
The rest are: Secretary, six aspirants, including a female; Assistant Secretary, three; Treasurer, three; Organizer, five; Women’s Organizer, four; Youth Organiser, two; and Nasara Coordinator; two.
The Committee Chairman urged the delegates to put the party first in the election and conduct themselves in lawful and peaceful manner that would not mar the exercise.
He also advised the public against going to the election centre as persons without accreditation would not be allowed to access the venue.
