Roads ministry targets 137 new recruits to boost capacity for Big Push programme

The Ministry of Roads and Highways is set to recruit a total of 137 staff across five agencies in 2026, including the Department of Feeder Roads, Urban Roads, and Highways, as well as two other agencies.

The disclosure was made by the Chairman of the Committee on Roads and Transport, Isaac Adjei Mensah, while moving a motion for the adoption of the Committee’s report seeking approval of GH₵5.37 billion for the Roads Ministry.

According to him, the approval is important to help augment the staff strength of the ministry to execute, especially, the Big Push project.

He further pointed out that “the committee noted the issue of inadequacy of staffing levels in the ministry, so we realised that the departments of feeder roads, urban roads, highways, the road front, and the Koforidua section do have serious issues relating to manning levels, and therefore the need to fill these manning levels was seen to be the appropriate thing to do.”

Outlining the recruitment plan under the current budget, Mr Mensah said that “in this budget, the ministry has decided to engage reasonable numbers of people to do the infilling, and about 137 staffing levels will be filled this year, and we think that it is something that we need to support.

Aside from the GHC 30.8 billion the government has allocated directly to the Big Push project, the Roads Ministry has estimated to spend GHC 5.37 billion in compensation of employees, goods and services, and Capex.

“For the 2026 financial year, the sum of GHC 5,378,458,359.00 has been allocated to the Ministry of Roads and Highways for the implementation of its activities in the 2026 financial year. Out of this allocation, GHC 142,687,104 has been allocated to payment of compensation, GHC 59,191,005 to goods and services, and GHC 5,176,580,250 for capex,” the committee’s report noted.

In addition, the ministry is projected to receive GH₵910.8 million in funding support from international development partners.
