The Member of Parliament for Tamale North and Deputy Minister-designate for Roads and Highways, Alhassan Suhuyini, has called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the controversial National Cathedral project.
Speaking on the JoyNews AM show, he stressed the need to establish whether any misconduct had occurred.
He argued that if wrongdoing had taken place, it was essential to identify those responsible, those who could have prevented it, and those who may have benefitted.
“It is crucial that we thoroughly investigate this matter,” he lamented. “If any wrongdoing has occurred, we must determine who is accountable, who could have stopped it, and who benefitted from it.”
He said it is vital to take the necessary steps to punish those at fault in order to restore public confidence in Ghana’s governance systems.
“Such actions will reassure the public that our systems are genuinely working in their best interests,” he added.
He also addressed the growing public perception surrounding the involvement of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
While acknowledging that an investigation may vindicate him, he maintained that the perception of his involvement remains strong.
“Even if it is concluded that Ken Ofori-Atta is not directly responsible, the general belief is that he played a significant role in what transpired regarding the cathedral,” he said.
He further suggested that it is in the best interest of Ofori-Atta and his supporters to advocate for a transparent investigation, particularly if they believe that all actions were carried out above board.
“If they truly believe that everything was done properly, they should welcome an investigation to clear their names,” he asserted.
Mr Suhuyini emphasised that a thorough inquiry would not only clarify the situation but also restore confidence in Ghana’s governance.
“An investigation is crucial, not just to dispel any doubts, but to preserve the integrity of our leadership and governance systems,” he said.
