Togbe Asafo Buatri IV - Ag. President of the Mafi Traditional Council

The Mafi Traditional Council has announced the celebration of the 77th Mafi Hogbetsotso Za, scheduled to begin on Monday, 8th December, 2025, and climax with a Grand Durbar of Chiefs and People on Saturday, 13th December 2025, at Mafi Adidome, the traditional capital of the Mafi State.

This year’s festival is being held under the theme: “Fostering Unity, Peace and Love for Development.”

Organisers say the theme reflects the commitment of the Mafi State to promote cohesion among its people, reinforce cultural identity, and rally collective effort towards development.

The 2025 edition will feature a rich blend of traditional, cultural, and communal activities, highlighting the heritage of the Mafi people.

Key among these is the Ancestral Pilgrimage to Kpordoave, the original settlement of the Mafi after their historic escape from Notsie under the tyrannical rule of King Agorkorli. As tradition demands, Mafi chiefs will cross the River Volta to Kpordoave, where sacred rites will be performed to officially open the festival and invoke ancestral blessings for the state.

Another major highlight is the Traditional Procession to Adidome Torkor, a symbolic journey to one of the most revered heritage sites of the Mafi State. The procession commemorates the struggles, battles, and sacrifices of the Mafi ancestors and serves as a reminder to the youth of the resilience and unity that shaped their history.

The festival will reach its climax on Saturday, 13 December 2025, with a colourful Grand Durbar featuring traditional drumming, dancing, cultural displays, and the majestic pageantry of chiefs and queen mothers from across the Mafi State and beyond. A large number of dignitaries from Ghana, the Volta Region, and the diaspora are expected to attend.

Speaking ahead of the celebration, the Acting Paramount Chief and Acting President of the Mafi Traditional Council, Togbe Asafo Buatri IV, emphasised the importance of unity and shared purpose.

“This year’s festival will be another layer of building blocks on the strong foundation laid by our forebears and our recent efforts. It is meant to unite all citizens of Mafi, both home and abroad, around a common purpose of development. Our unity, peace, and love remain the bedrock upon which we will build a prosperous future for Mafi,” he said.

Togbe Asafo Buatri IV further called on all citizens, corporate institutions, friends of Mafi, and development partners to support and actively participate in the celebration.

The Mafi Hogbetsotso Za is held annually in remembrance of the legendary migration of the Ewe people—particularly the Mafi—from the oppression of King Agorkorli of Notsie.

The festival serves as both a spiritual reflection and a celebration of resilience, identity, and community progress.

The Mafi Traditional Council is therefore inviting all citizens, cultural enthusiasts, tourists, and the general public to join in marking the 77th Mafi Hogbetsotso Za.
