Kwakye Ofosu denies presidency’s hand in petitions against Special Prosecutor and EC officials

Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has firmly rejected claims that the Presidency engineered the series of petitions seeking the removal of Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng, Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa, and her deputies, Dr Eric Bossman Asare and Samuel Tettey.

His comments follow the submission of ten separate petitions by private individuals to the Office of the President, alleging misconduct ranging from incompetence and abuse of office to concerns over electoral administration. The development prompted speculation that the petitions had been coordinated or influenced by government actors.

Addressing the matter on Citi FM on Monday, 1 December, Mr Kwakye Ofosu dismissed the accusations as baseless and challenged critics to provide evidence of any wrongdoing.

“The critics would have to demonstrate proof of the supposed ‘cooking’ and ‘eating’, wouldn’t they?” he remarked.

He stressed that the government had no involvement with those who lodged the petitions, insisting that the submissions were entirely independent. He further assured the public that any committee convened to consider the petitions would operate without interference.

“There is no scope for manipulation or influence from the executive—none whatsoever. The committee will be constituted by the Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, not by the President, John Dramani Mahama,” he stated.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu confirmed that all petitions have now been referred to the Chief Justice, who will determine the appropriate course of action in accordance with constitutional provisions.
