Contrary to the emergence of many hip hop artistes from Kumerica, one of its founding members, Tony Dath has intimated that the movement goes beyond the American genre.
Citing himself as an example, he said the movement also has artistes that represent other genres, a reason he embodies Ghana indigenous sound, highlife.
Speaking with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz, Tony Dath explained why he chose to do highlife when Kumerica was widely known for hip pop music.
“I’m a co-founder of Kumerica. Kumerica itself lost its identity to different camps and we that owned it were not mature enough. Kumerica brought us here; it is what brought me here,” he noted.
He also stated that the movement has served as a eye opener to the musicians, leading people like him to exhibit his highlife brand.
“Kumerica came to open our eyes, even though we didn’t also use it well. But while we were doing our interviews about Kumerica, we kept stating it that Kumerica is a channel for we musicians, just like the movie side having the Kumawood. So Kumerica is not just about hip hop and all that, but they championed it and they had the audience by then. But this is the time for us to correct it, through me, Tony Dath,” he explained.
