I am not a great fan of 'Detty December' - Kofi Okyere Darko

The Director of Diaspora Affairs, Kofi Okyere Darko, known in the creative space as KOD, has shared his reservations about the Detty December brand.

He said in an interview with the Ghana Times media network that he does not fully embrace the concept.

Detty December refers to the wave of parties, festivals, concerts and homecoming activities that take place in Ghana throughout December.

The term is widely linked to former Mr Eazi manager, Bernard Kafui Sopke, popularly known as Mr. Meister, during the period the artiste lived and worked in Ghana.

In an Ghanaweb report published on May 6, 2025, Bernard said he coined the term ‘Detty December’ in 2019 during a December concert for Nigerian artiste Mr. Eazi.

“At that time, we used to call him ‘Detty Boy’. So for that December concert, ‘Life is Easy’, we decided to call it ‘Detty December because it was just going to be a fun December, an exciting December. It was like showing the full limits of enjoying December to the max,” he said.

He further explained that, ‘detty” is a playful adaptation of the Ghanaian expression “dirty your body,” which refers to engaging in fun activities that might leave one physically messed up but emotionally happy.

KOD in his recent interview said he was not particularly excited about the concept.

“Personally I am not a great fan of Detty December. It’s one of the reasons we are having events like the Diaspora Summit under the auspices of the President between 19th and 20th December,” he said.

He added that many visitors from the diaspora do not travel to Ghana solely for entertainment.

“Many people from the Diaspora are coming to Ghana. They are all not coming to have fun. There are people who are here for business opportunities as well so we want to go beyond the Detty December, great opportunities to network and bring money home,” he said.

KOD made the comment when asked whether the government’s Blackstar Experience programme had replaced Detty December.

A few months ago, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, also suggested that the name “Detty December” conveyed negative lifestyle implications.

In the meantime, Nigeria has swiftly adopted ‘Detty December’ with some of their online reports crediting the country as the origin.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Tourism Authority has amplified the drive for December in GH activities for this year with many billboards mounted in various parts in Accra. A lot of activities and events, as captured on GTA’s December in GH calendar, will take place within the December period.

While most of the events started in mid-November, others will also run into the early weeks of January 2026.
