Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim, has reiterated warnings that members of the ruling government found to be involved in illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, will not be shielded from accountability.
Speaking on JoyNews’s Newsfile on Saturday, 21st June, she indicated that a firm decision has been taken at the highest level of government to ensure that political affiliation does not become a refuge for wrongdoing.
“At the highest level, decisions have been made that no member of the NDC (ruling political party) found in any illegal mining activity will, under the guise of being a member of this government, go scot free,” she said.
Her comments reinforce earlier warnings issued by President John Mahama, who has consistently cautioned his appointees against any involvement in the illicit trade.
The President, on numerous platforms, has reiterated his commitment to protecting Ghana’s natural resources and has made clear that there will be no tolerance for impunity, even within his own government.
