GJA commends police for improved relations with the media

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has commended the Ghana Police Service for fostering stronger relations with the media, describing the renewed cooperation as vital for promoting national peace, security, and accountability.

Speaking at the 29th GJA Media Awards in Kumasi, the President of the Association, Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, acknowledged the improved rapport between the two institutions and praised the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohunu, for his commitment to maintaining open and respectful engagement with journalists.

“We must acknowledge the improvements in relations between the media and the Ghana Police Service,” Mr. Dwumfuor said.

“On behalf of the national executive and the Fourth Estate of the Realm, I commend the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Christian Tetteh Nyowulu, for maintaining a cordial rapport with journalists since our last engagement,” he praised.

He noted that the restoration of mutual trust between the police and the media is essential to ensuring journalists’ safety, especially when covering security operations or working in sensitive environments.

“We believe this renewed trust will ensure that journalists feel safer working with the police, even in sensitive environments, and we trust in you,” he added.

The remarks come at a time when the GJA is emphasizing collaboration among key national stakeholders to safeguard Ghana’s stability and democratic values.

This year’s awards are being held under the theme, “Safeguarding Ghana’s Future: The Role of the Media in Promoting Peace, Security and the Fight Against Galamsey.”

According to Mr. Dwumfuor, the theme reflects the crucial role of the media in shaping public discourse, holding duty bearers accountable, and supporting national development efforts.

He urged journalists to continue reporting responsibly while strengthening partnerships with law enforcement to protect both the nation and the profession.

“We believe the media will continue to make the necessary impact to safeguard the future of Ghana,” he said.
