GhIE inducts 148 professional engineers

The President of the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE), Ing. Kwabena Bempong, has inducted 148 Professional Engineers at its 45^th induction ceremony at the Engineering Centre, Accra.

The 148 new inductees were made up of 54 Civil Engineers, 20 Mechanical/Agric. Engineers, 23 Chemical/Mining Engineers and 51 Electrical/Electronic Engineers. Out of these number, 134 candidates participated in the various Professional Engineering Examination held in October/November, 2024 whilst 14 participated in confirmation hearing in January 2025, making a total of 148 Professional Engineers.

Swearing in the newly inducted Professional Engineers, the President of GhIE, Ing. Kwabena Bempong said there were many challenges out there and Ghana was looking for solutions which, he believes as engineering practitioners they were possessed with relevant knowledge, experience and desire to face frontally.

He therefore charged them not to be part of the challenges or problems but solution-oriented practitioners who bring relief, comfort and make life worth living for our countrymen and women.

He further encouraged the new inductees to engage actively in national discourse on infrastructure, development and politics, stressing that, “your voice is needed to influence policy and drive the strategic initiatives that will shape the future of our dear nation”.

Furthermore, Ing. Bempong recommended to the engineers that they should find time to exercise regularly, eat healthily, find time to relax and learn other subjects apart from engineering, saying, “I recommend you to acquire the basic knowledge in areas such as diplomacy, public speaking, finance, accounting, law, corporate management, etc, so that you will become complete and know how to navigate through your life as a professional”.

He called on all engineering practitioners to actively participate in the activities of GhIE, especially the upcoming Engineering Conference and AGM scheduled to begin from 24^th March through to 29^th March, 2025. He hinted that through the participation of GhIE activities, members would have the opportunity to network with like-minded professionals from all over the world, exchange ideas and contacts, learn from those who have paved the way before them.   

The Chairman, Membership Committee of GhIE, Ing. Dr. Patrick Amoah Bekoe in his induction speech, explained that the Ghana Institution of Engineering is organised into four Technical Divisions and four Occupational Groups.

The four Technical Divisions include Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering and Mechanical/Marine/Agric. Engineering.

He added that, as outlined in the Engineering Council Act, 2011 (Act 819), the four Occupational Groups are categorized as Professional Engineers, Professional Engineering Technologists, Engineering Technicians and Engineering Craftsmen.

Ing. Dr. Patrick Amoah Bekoe revealed that all the 148 candidates being inducted belong to the Professional Engineers Occupational Group.

In a word of advice to the newly inducted Professional Engineers, Ing. Isaac Bedu, Registrar of the Engineering Council of Ghana, said, as they embark on this journey, it is critical to remember that the engineering profession is held to the highest standards.

He added that the work of engineering practitioners directly impacts people’s lives and, as such, demands adherence to best practices, high ethical considerations, and compliance with regulations, as laid out by the Engineering Council Act, 2011 (ACT 819) and accompanying regulations (L.I 2410).

He informed the newly inducted Professional Engineers that the law requires that each engineering practitioner must be licensed before they can practice.

He said induction into the engineering fraternity is what you have achieved today, it doesn’t mean you have been licensed.

He added that GhIE will submit your names and credentials to the Engineering Council through the Registrar for scrutiny following which you will be licensed to practice.

Awards were presented to inductees who performed excellently in the four technical divisions, namely Ing. Giona Jaynelle Asafu-Adajaye-overall best in the Chemical/Mining Technical division; Ing. Emmanuel Odompreh Kwadjo-Dei-overall best in the Mech/Agric/Marine Technical division; Ing. Bernard Wiafe Akenteng-overall best in the Civil Technical Division whilst Ing. Adusei Bismark Kyeremeh was adjudged the overall best in the Electrical/Electronic Technical division.

Present at the ceremony were Ing. Ludwig Annan Hesse-President-elect of GhIE, Ing. Samuel Magnus Asiedu-Ag. Executive Director of GhIE, Ing. David Nyante-Former Executive Director of GhIE, Members of the Council of GhIE, Past Presidents of GhIE, Ing. Yaa Okudzeto-Chairperson of the Organising Committee of the 2025 Engineering Conference & AGM, Ing. Darlington Ahuble-Chair of Mechanical Technical Division, Ing. Ebenezer Roberts-Chair of Electrical Technical Division, Ing. Michael Obeng Konadu-Chair of Civil Technical Division, Ing. Prof. Nana Yaw Asiedu-Chair of Chemical Technical Division and Guests of inductees. The programme was moderated by Ing. Joseph Oddei, past Chair of the Civil Technical Division of GhIE.
