Ghana, “Neutrals”, some Intellectuals and Civil Society Organizations and the new Animal Farm

Ghana, “Neutrals”, some Intellectuals and Civil Society Organizations and the new Animal Farm

Plato, one of the best known original thinkers from Ancient Greece, made an allegorical comparison of leaders with sailors and opined that sailing a ship takes special skills and competence and not a popularity contest. For him, competence should be the qualification for leadership. Plato’s based his concept on his well founded apprehension that if the knowledgeable and competent persons abandon the field of governance in the hands of the incompetent ones and cheap talkers, the country would not just be ruined but the educated, technocrats, Popes and Bishops stand the risk of being led by idiots. Sacred and unsuitable is fact is that happenings in the country the last 24 months including collapse of banks, massive corruption, constitutional breaches, nepotism, killings and kidnappings confirm the assertion that our politics or ruling class is dominated by persons who were railroaded into offices and appointed or elected without any form of adherence or respect for the best global practices whereby only the best should be good leadership. This is the reason why Ghana is dropping in corruption perception index, human development index, best place for doing business with our 110 ministers and 999 presidential staffers. We preach modernization but have elected a 74 year old to lead the country. We’ve put new wine in old wine skin and hope to witness technological advances forgetting that an analogue person is at the helm of affairs in the country. This is existential hypocrisy at its apogee.

Unfortunately for Ghana, some of our politicians, intellectuals, civil society organizations, religious leaders have started redefining hypocrisy and falsehood to look like acceptable statecraft. These persons and organizations who tormented the Mahama administration have suddenly lost their voices and abandoned what they said were their core principles. They are afraid of losing out in the bonanza of sharing national cake with President Akufo-Addo the chief cake sharer.

Political and intellectual hypocrisy breeds nepotism and nepotism breeds corruption just as corruption leads to the erosion of integrity in the system and erosion of integrity the system leads to state of state of hopelessness, failing infrastructure, collapsing of banks and businesses , high crime rate and frustrations which spirals into general breakdown of law and order. This is the prevailing situation in Ghana under President Akufo-Addo.

President Akufo-Addo is merely overrated ; he is worshipped, rather madly like possessed ones, by people who are carried away by his rhetoric and demagoguery but the reality of leadership and the standard set by his predecessor John Mahama, have exploded the illusion of Akufo-Addo’s messianic abilities and exposed him as an empty and extremely incompetent, in order words, as just an ordinary politician. It is incontestable fact that Akufo-Addo has lost his image as an ascetic, no nonsense and incorruptible leader.

But those civil society organizations, intellectuals, experts and resource persons who appointed themselves examiners of the Mahama administration and told us they were doing that as first class patriots of the land, see nothing wrong with this sharp decline. The question is, why this hypocrisy, why this nauseating contradiction and why does it take so long for these so called apostles of good governance to comment on these negative acts and the emerging problems. The only problem is that while the same Ghanaians with high intelligence as noted in many parts of the world and at home where their competence is unmatched by African standards, through numerous pursuits, there are conspicuous signs that this intelligentsia has not been made to good use, especially for nurturing Ghana into a vibrant nation that is multicultural and diverse. Some of our so called neutrals and experts allow ethnicity and tribalism to influence their reasoning. It at times beat my imagination why men with powerful academic background, men of God would have a habit of lying and lying so brazenly.

Professor Adei, a former GIMPA rector, accused Mahama of running a family and friends government without providing a single evidence to support his claim. Joyce Bawa was the only family member of John Mahama in the Mahama administration and that fact has not been challenged. The current President, Nana Akufo-Addo, has appointed over 50 family members including a daughter into his government. All the juicy positions including the Finance Minister position are occupied by his cousins, in-laws, other family members and friends. Nepotism breeds corruption but the moral crusaders and anti corruption crusaders who constantly kept Mahama and his appointees in check, see nothing wrong with this new phenomenon.

While former President Mahama and his party can point to over 9000 major projects that the Mahama administration initiated, started and completed, I challenge the Akufo-Addo administration to name just five projects that they have initiated, started and completed in the last two years from the over Ghc 60 billion borrowed so far. The hypocrites are not interested in knowing how the over Ghc 60 billion was used. Ghana suffered its worse retrogression in Transparency International’s corruption perception index under Akufo-Addo but the corruption crusaders see this unfortunate development as an ordinary trend.

Investors are leaving the country because of the administration’s policies and the unfavourable prevailing economic condition but once again, it is no news. Under Mahama, Ghana was a magnet for investment and was the number one destination for foreign direct business in West Africa. Under Akufo-Addo, Ghana is not even included in the top five in West Africa. So widely known were the good governance of Ghana under Mahama that United Nations appointed him and other Ghanaians to head some of its organs. Ghana has lost this international image because of happenings under the current administration including corruption, nepotism, killings, kidnappings, human right abuse, money laundering etc.

Every Ghanaian knows that the Akufo-Addo government is the most corrupt in the history of our nation. The President is not only clueless but also has insatiable appetite for corruption. Candidate Akufo-Addo and his party folks told wicked lies about President Mahama and his appointees, some people were misled with smoke and mirrors but the Transparency International’s corruption perception index unsentimental facts and figures have exposed their hypocrisy and wickedness.

A good leader has futuristic vision and knows how to turn his ideas into real world success stories. We saw that under Mahama. He did not bus pastors to Akosombo to pray for rains, but solved permanently Ghana’s perennial power problem by adding over 4000 megawatts of power to what he inherited. Ghana is now a net exporter of power because of this wonderful initiative.

World class airlines stopped operation in Ghana because of the deteriorated state of our airport. Our aeroplanes were converted into restaurants, workers of Ghana Airways lost their jobs. The Mahama administration renovated our airport and brought it back to its international status apart from building more local airports. As usual, the hypocrites will not talk about these enviable achievements but will praise the empty talker who always want to take credit for his predecessors projects, who removes plaques and pics of his predecessor on projects he implemented and fix his on them.
