Ex-convict arrested in connection with violent taxi robbery

Police have apprehended Vincent Gbetorglo, an ex-convict, in connection with a violent robbery and carjacking incident that occurred earlier this year involving a taxi driver.

The arrest took place on July 30, 2025, at the Accra Mall, following crucial intelligence gathered by law enforcement officials.

During Gbetorglo’s arrest, authorities discovered four mobile phones, one of which was confirmed to belong to Vic Martin Obeng, the taxi driver who was attacked on New Year’s Day.

The action taken by the police has raised hopes of bringing further clarity and justice to this harrowing case.

The ordeal began when Obeng filed a complaint at the CID Headquarters on January 6, 2025.

He reported that on January 1, around 9:00 p.m., while driving his ash-and-yellow Toyota Corolla taxi (registration number GM 296-16), he picked up three passengers at Madina Zongo Junction.

What started as a routine fare quickly turned violent.

According to Obeng, as they approached the Haatso ICGC Church, the passengers attacked him.

“They attacked me inside the vehicle, covered my face with my own shirt, and tied me up,” he recounted.

The police report detailed how the suspects forced Obeng to lie on the floor of the back seat before taking control of the vehicle. They made off with his daily earnings, his mobile phone, and a staggering GHC 13,000 in mobile money before abandoning him near Westland.

Following the incident, investigators promptly visited the crime scene and initiated a manhunt, aided by tips from informants.

Gbetorglo’s arrest came as a result of these efforts, with the stolen mobile phone found in his possession serving as a critical piece of evidence.

During questioning, Gbetorglo claimed he had purchased the phones at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, but failed to provide any details about the seller.

Police records revealed that he is an ex-convict who had previously served a 40-year sentence handed down by the Cocoa Affairs Court 1 in 2011.

He was released in 2023 following a successful appeal.

Authorities are increasingly concerned that this incident may be part of a larger trend involving a criminal syndicate that specifically targets taxi drivers.

As investigations continue, police are currently working to apprehend Gbetorglo’s accomplices and recover the stolen vehicle, aiming to dismantle this dangerous network.
