Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, received a rousing welcome at the Kotoka International Airport on Monday, July 28, following their third-place finish at the 2024 African Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Ghana secured the bronze medal after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory over South Africa, marking their first podium finish at the tournament since 2016.
The third place playoff game ended 1-1 in regulation time before the Queens held their nerve to edge past Banyana Banyana.
The team’s arrival in Accra was met with enthusiastic scenes, as hundreds of supporters gathered from as early as 4:00 am to welcome the contingent. Clad in national colours, the fans sang, danced, and waved flags in honour of the players’ achievement.
This latest performance is seen as a significant milestone in the team’s rebuilding process under the current technical leadership. The bronze medal ends an eight-year medal drought at the continental level and signals renewed hope for the growth of women’s football in Ghana.
Officials from the Ghana Football Association (GFA), representatives from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and former national players were also at the airport to receive the team.
The Black Queens are expected to present their medal to national leaders in the coming days as part of official recognition ceremonies.
