Akwatia By-Election: NPP alleges NDC plot to use impostors in Police uniform

The Communications Director of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of planning to deploy individuals disguised as police officers during the upcoming Akwatia by-election.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, August 27, Mr. Ahiagbah alleged that the NPP had received credible intelligence suggesting that the NDC was training “thugs” under the pretext of national security.

“These individuals, who were reportedly involved in the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, are now being prepared to be ‘clothed in police uniform’ and secretly deployed during the by-election,” he claimed.

Mr. Ahiagbah warned that the NPP remained vigilant despite being out of government.

“We have our eyes and ears on the ground, aware of what the NDC is capable of,” he said.

He further disclosed that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) had assured the NPP that a comprehensive deployment plan was in place for the by-election, scheduled for September 2, 2025, in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region.

According to Mr. Ahiagbah, the IGP has committed to sharing the list of deployed officers with all political parties involved.

“The NPP demands the list of senior officers assigned to each electoral area, as well as the regional commanders assisting them, as assured by the IGP,” he stated.

The by-election follows the death of Member of Parliament Ernest Kumi on July 7 after a short illness.
