Amid Ghana’s ongoing economic struggles, a recent delegates poll has unveiled a striking revelation: President Nana Akufo-Addo retains an ardent following within his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The comprehensive survey, which canvassed the opinions of over 4,300 NPP delegates from every corner of the nation, disclosed that an astounding 79% of respondents approve of the President’s job performance.
Conducted by Global Info Analytics between October 2 and 11, this poll assumes significance as the NPP gears up to select its next presidential candidate in the forthcoming November 4th elections.
Akufo-Addo’s exceptional job approval rating is particularly noteworthy against the backdrop of Ghana’s ongoing economic turmoil, characterized by surging inflation rates and currency depreciation.
The data suggests that the party base staunchly stands behind their leader even in times of adversity, demonstrating an unwavering confidence in his leadership.
As the NPP readies itself for a demanding re-election campaign in 2024, unity and cohesion behind President Akufo-Addo assume paramount importance. The party is keen to avert any public discord or disagreements over the President’s economic management that have emerged recently.
This is regardless of recent public criticism of government policy by breakaway candidate and former Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyerematen and immediate past Agriculture Minister and NPP Presidential hopeful Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto.
What is not clear is whether this public show of support will translate into votes for the establishment candidate, Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia.
While the NPP’s presidential race remains an open arena, with the Vice President holding a lead at 43.5% among delegates, the bold emergence of MP Kennedy Agyapong, boasting 23.5% support, promises an electrifying and closely contested race ahead.
