Chief Executive Officer of Ishmael Yamson & Associates, Dr. Ishmael Evans Yamson, is appealing to President Akufo-Addo to run a lean government in his last year in office.
According to the renowned business management consultant, this will help government save money and reduce pressure on the public purse.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, Dr. Yamson argued that there are so many appointees with overlapping functions who are draining the country’s financial resources.
“Right now, this economy is on its knees and we know why we are where we are. We have had appointees who have done nothing. I will expect him to slim his government to save cost even if for 6 months because it will save this country a lot of money.
“You cannot pour water into a basket; the water will just drain to the floor and that is why the 3 billion from IMF for me is nothing.
“What Ghana needs is not 3 billion, we need far more than that. So I would like to see him, if he can, to demonstrate that he can run a lean and effective government,” he said.
Dr. Yamson also explained that one of the biggest challenges facing the country is inefficient bureaucracy since all government officials are appointed by the President.
“The Chief Director, the CEO of this and that were all appointed by the President so why should they behave differently?
“They lack the political strength and the political will to say no when they should say no.
“I have heard on television, a whole Minister saying the President has to agree with everything so what due diligence does our President do?”
The former member of the Economic Advisory Council set up by former President John Evans Atta Mills, also urged parliamentarians to be diligent in the discharge of their duties especially when it comes to approving deals and contracts.
“Every time a new government comes they are accusing the previous government of having signed a bad agreement. But your people were in Parliament, they approved that agreement, only for the government to leave office and you come and say this agreement was tainted with corruption.
“You were there. You saw it. You didn’t shout. You didn’t scream so why are you now coming to say it is tainted with corruption.”
