The Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua, Seth Osei Akoto, has completed and commissioned an 18-year-abandoned Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound at Okyerekrom, bringing long-awaited healthcare services to about 20 rural communities in the constituency.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Mr Osei Akoto said completing abandoned health projects is a key priority of his parliamentary agenda, stressing that access to basic healthcare should not be a luxury for rural residents.

“This facility will significantly improve healthcare delivery in this area and reduce the burden on residents who have had to travel long distances to seek medical attention,” he said.

The CHPS compound was started in 2008 as part of efforts to improve primary healthcare delivery but was left abandoned for nearly two decades. The prolonged delay exposed residents of Okyerekrom and surrounding communities to serious health risks.

For years, residents were forced to travel several kilometres to Nyinahini to access medical care — a situation community members say contributed to avoidable deaths, particularly during medical emergencies.

Mr Osei Akoto noted that reviving stalled and abandoned projects, especially in health and education, forms part of his broader development focus for the constituency. He said the completion of the facility aligns with national efforts to strengthen primary healthcare and bring services closer to underserved communities.

Local leaders and residents who attended the ceremony welcomed the development, describing it as a major relief and a step towards improving health outcomes in the area.

The CHPS compound is expected to provide basic outpatient services, maternal and child health care, and emergency first response for the beneficiary communities.
