WASSCE Results: ‘The results are the true competence of our learners’ - GES admits

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has admitted that the 2025 WASSCE results accurately reflect the abilities of the students who sat for the exams.

This follows a growing national debate over the sharp decline in performance.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition on Monday, December 1, Daniel Fenyi of the GES Public Relations Unit said the Service fully aligns with WAEC’s position on the outcome.

He explained that GES staff play an active role in the conduct of the exams, and therefore, the results mirror the true picture of student performance.

“Indeed, we perfectly agree, and not that we just agree, but we work closely with WAEC,” he said.

He noted that the students who write the exams are GES learners, while “the invigilators, the supervisors, largely our staff,” making the two institutions tightly connected in the entire process.

Mr Fenyi stressed that GES is involved in monitoring, supervision, and collaboration throughout the examination period.

“We monitor, we supervise, we collaborate with them to conduct these examinations,” he said.

He stated plainly that the grades released represent the real competence levels of the candidates.

“And so it is not that we agree, that is actually the case, that the results you see are a true reflection of the competencies of our learners,” he emphasised.

But he admitted that the outcome is painful for the education system. “Even though it is worrying. I mean, it is concerning,” he said.

He added that teachers invest years in preparing students and do not expect such results.

“You wouldn’t train your learners for three good years, take them through all the lessons, teach them, expose them to all the necessary books and content they have to be exposed to, only for them to churn out these results.”

He described the situation as troubling for anyone who cares about the future of young people.
