Afenyo-Markin has scandalised himself and his profession – Fuseini slams ‘paymasters’ comment

Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has condemned Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin for publicly accusing judges of serving the interests of political “paymasters,” saying the comments scandalised both the lawmaker and the legal profession.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, Fuseini, himself a lawyer, said Afenyo-Markin should have followed proper legal channels rather than attacking the judiciary in public.

“Afenyo-Markin should be on his way to the General Legal Council—not because he’s the Minority Leader, but because he’s a lawyer. He has scandalised himself and his profession,” Mr Fuseini said.

When asked whether the Minority Leader’s claims could have merit if he possessed evidence of judicial wrongdoing, Mr Fuseini insisted that the correct approach would have been to present those facts formally to the legal disciplinary body.

“If he has facts about a judge being paid, he should go there to show them. The facts will be his defense. But he cannot scandalise the courts in the way he has done as a lawyer,” he said.

Background

Following the Tamale High Court’s annulment of the 2024 parliamentary election in the Kpandai Constituency, which ordered a rerun within 30 days, the Minority Leader, in response, publicly criticised the judiciary, calling their actions “shameful” and accusing judges of acting for political ‘paymasters’.

Speaking to journalists in Parliament on Wednesday, November 26, he warned that the judiciary’s conduct “has the tendency of destroying our peaceful republic” and said he was ready to face any contempt proceedings.
