Youth of Manya and Yilo Krobo in the Eastern Region on Thursday, October 12, demonstrated against their chiefs for failing to work for the development of the two communities.
According to the youth, the two communities have not seen much development because the traditional authorities are not cooperating with state institutions to assist the towns.
Leader of the youth, Noah Martey, who spoke in interview with Benet, a local journalist, said one of the problems confronting the people in the two communities is overbilling by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). They claim that the exorbitant bills have plunged the residents into untold hardship.
The chiefs, he said, were petitioned to intervene by appealing to the ECG to reduce the tariffs, but due the division among the traditional rulers, they have been unable to do that.
“We are doing demonstration against our chiefs – both Yilo and Manya – because of overbilling by the ECG. The chiefs are not helping matters by not fighting on our behalf to ensure that the bills are reduced.
“We will continue doing the demonstration until our issues are solved. We are presenting our petition to the Municipal Chief Executive of Mayna Krobo and Upper Manya Krobo respectively.”
He further indicated that until these issues are addressed, they will protest against the celebration of the Ngmayem festival this year.
