In a bid to facilitate accurate interest and constant reportage on migration issues in Ghana and the ECOWAS Sub region, a mobile online application and database of migration stories have been officially launched at the Ministry of Information ministry as part of a media training and public sensation on ECOWAS Migrants Rights in Accra.
Irregular migration though a worldwide problem, has increasingly become common in the West African Region. Within the ECOWAS enclave, million s of people especially the youth risk their lives to cross the Sahara desert and the Meditarinean Sea into Libya and Europe, sometimes falling victim to human trafficking, Human right abuse, sexual and labour exploitation.
In a bid to highlight the situation to the public and help the media to accurately and objectively report on these issues, a mobile application and database of migration stories has been launched at the Ministry of Information to that effect.
Speaking at the Launch, the Assistant Superintendent of Ghana Immigration Service, Richard Birinfour commended how the app will help their job via the media to caution people against irregular migration.
Delivering his address at the event, the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah stressed on the disturbing trend of irregular migration in the West African region including Ghana and its associated risk.
For him, the creation of jobs and opportunities as part of growing economies of countries is a very effective solution to deal with the growing problem.
He added that failure to create more jobs and business opportunities in the country is a major contribution to irregular migration via the Saharan and across the Mediterranean in search of greener pasture.
