Accra Hearts of Oak Striker, Kwame Kizito’s lone goal ensured victory for La XI against Tema XI to lift the 2017 McDan Ga Adangme Unity Cup match played on Sunday at the La Town Park, Accra.
The match, played at a packed Park and watched by dignitaries including Former President Jerry John Rawlings, Stephen Appiah, Laryea Kingston, Emmanuel Armah, all former Black Stars players, lived up to expectation.
It was all joy and excitement when Kizito’s goal broke the deadlock with only a few minutes to end the game.
Both sides created many chances but it was the star-studded La team, which had players from the Ghana Premier League and lower division including Kizito, Samuel Sarfo of Liberty Professionals, Samudeen Ibrahim of Hearts of Oak, Ollenu Ashitey of Asante Kotoko, which came up tops.
The competition featured eight teams from La, Ga Mashie, Osu, Teshie, Nungua, Tema, Prampram and Ada. La XI, for winning the tournament, received a cash prize of $2,000 and a giant trophy.
The second runners-up also received $1,000, whilst third placed Nungua, who beat Teshie on penalties had $450.00. All the medalists including the fourth-placed team received assorted drinks from Twellium Industries Ghana Ltd.
The sponsors of the competition, McDan Group, also presented a trophy and $150.00 to the best Goalkeeper Kotei Blankson. The best player of the tournament, Benjamin Anang, received $200.00, whilst Maxwell Kwei took the Goal King award and received $150.00.
The fair play award went to the La Supporters Union and received $200.00 for their efforts.
The Liberty Professional defender Sarfo, who grew up in La, told the GNA Sports that, though his side won, the Tema team also had good players like Eric Kwakwa formerly of Medeama SC.
He commended the organisers for the competition, which he said, would help unearth talents for the country.
