Former President John Dramani Mahama has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Government of attempting to use the NIA registration to denationalize some Ghanaians. He is in accordance warning the Nana Addo led administration that the NDC will fight to resist the move.
The former President speaking to members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) after their final unity walk in the Volta Region over the weekend assured that he will fight for the majority of Ghanaians to receive their Ghana Cards being issued by the National Identification Authority.
“And so the NDC is going to do everything to fight for the best interest of the majority of the people to make sure that they are able to be identified and be given cards so that they can be identified as boneyfied Ghanaians”
Using his hometown in Borle where residents there do not possess birth certificates or Passports, Mr. Mahama also stressed that the idea of using only those means to issue the Ghana card to people is flawed and shows signs of incompetence.
The National Identification Authority last week started issuing the Ghana Card to workers at the Jubilee house and is expected to continue to all parts of the country in the coming months. John Mahama is however not happy with the Government’s decision to only allow people with Birth Certificates and Passports to register as he argues it is a deliberate attempt by the Government to denationalize some Ghanaians.
“It is illogical, short-sighted and very strong symbol of incompetence that you cannot think far that on the basis of what you have prescribed, as a criteria for qualification for the National Idea Card, you are going to disenfranchise more than 20 Million of our citizens.
He believes that is unacceptable and as such the NDC is going to do everything to fight for the best interest of the majority of Ghanaians to make sure they are able to be identified and be given cards
