The headmaster of Essiema Secondary/Technical Senior High School in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region, who took buckets of paints from freshers under the free Senior High School policy as part of the school’s prospectus, has been ordered to return them.
The District Director of Education, Madam Frances Williams gave the order after complaints from some parents that they were asked to each buy a bucket of paint to give the structure on the school’s campus a face lift were received.
According to the GES Director, the headmaster had ordered all fresh students to procure a bucket of paint in addition to whatever government was paying for purposely meant to paint some structures in the school.
But she disclosed that this was not discussed with the District Directorate of Education for approval wondering why the headmaster will unilaterally take such a decision when the Education Ministry has warned school heads against charging unapproved fees.
This however comes in the wake of the sanctioning of 11 schools heads who are reported to have flouted directives of the Ghana Education Council on the implementation of the free SHS.
Two have been relieved of their positions while the rest are on interdiction to either establish their culpability in acts undermining the implementation of government’s flagship policy or otherwise.
