The Ministry for Gender, Children and Social Protection (GCSP), is to train about 1000 Head Porters popularly known as ‘Kayayee’ to provide them with more decent jobs.
The Ministry in collaboration with the Youth Employment Agency offered 400 Kayayee skills training in 2016 but time collaborating with other public and private partners such as the National Board for Small Scale Industries, the Ghana Investment Fund for Communication and the Youth Authority to help Kayayee.
The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Otiko Afisa Djaba made this known in Parliament to alert the House on how to deal with the escalating menace of Head Porters. She said the NPP did promise Ghanaians before the 2016 elections to do away with the phenomenon therefore the move in that direction.
She also told the Legislature that the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) cash transfer will ensure that girls and women are kept in the three Northern Regions by including them in training and providing them with start-ups tools and mentorship.
